Food Distribution

Food may be picked up at St. Stephen's, food will not be delivered. Clients  may come and pick-up food once every two weeks. They must reside in the Current River, Lakeshore Drive, Copenhagen Road to Pass Lake area and show ID to verify residency; acceptable ID: current rent, hydro or telephone statement showing client’s name and address.

Donations

Food may be dropped off on Tuesday mornings. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit rules state that food may be spoiled in cans which are badly dented or dented on the top, bottom or side seams and should not be used. Therefore we request that no one purchase these dented cans of food for donation to the Food Cupboard as we have to discard them. As fresh produce becomes available in the summer from your gardens-or elsewhere at any time of year-donations of this are welcome.

Financial donations may be made, cheque payable to Current River Churches Food Cupboard. If you require an income tax receipt, make your donation through one of the Current River Churches.

History

The Current River Churches Food Cupboard was established in 1995 by the Current River Churches Ministerial (St. Stephen the Martyr Anglican, Calvin Presbyterian, Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic, Current River United). A coordinator was appointed and a committee of lay people was established to oversee operations. St. Stephen's Anglican Church was the base of operations with the Current River Churches being supportive with donations of food and/or monies. Epiphany Lutheran joined in 1997, Elim Community Christian Centre in 2002, and  Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in 2006.

The Food Cupboard was run quite informally from 1995 - 2001. Food was distributed by appointment only. During the summer of 2001, it became apparent that the Food Cupboard would need to become better organized to respond to the growing demand for food and a process was started to develop a constitution that was adopted in February 2002.
